What are primary elections?? Primary elections are earlier elections where political parties choose which candidates will appear on the ballot in the main election in November. In Maryland, voters help decide who their party will nominate to represent them in the general election. Only voters registered with a party can vote in that party’s primary, so Democrats vote for Democratic candidates and Republicans vote for Republican candidates. After the primaries, the winners from each party compete against each other in the general election.
